Many considerations go into choosing a new home. When you love gardening as much as Clif Cullenberg – a little land, a lot of sunshine, and good soil are definitely on the list. “The availability of a garden plot is one of the things that brought me to The Village at Duxbury,” Clif says. “And discovering and revitalizing the greenhouse was a bonus.” Village residents who share this passion are welcome to do whatever they wish with the community’s 5-foot by 10-foot garden plots. Some opt to grow vegetables, some prefer flowers. According to Clif, “Every plot is as individual as the person who creates and tends it. Gardening is a great way to use your imagination.” Fellow Village resident, Carol Loring, does wonders to keep the garden plots thriving, notes Clif.
Gardening is also a great way to improve physical and mental well-being. Research has shown that gardening burns calories, lowers blood pressure, relieves stress and has a positive effect on mood. This growing season at The Village featured tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, squash, herbs and more, along with a colorful array of annuals. Cliff says, “It’s nice to look at what other people are doing with their plots. The garden is a pleasant place to hang out.” He also enjoys growing “anything I can get my hands on,” and says, “I keep my fingernails dirty most of the summer!”
