In Search of the Snowy Owl at Duxbury Beach, Duxbury
The Snowy Owl is one of the most beautiful of all birds of prey. With a wingspan of 50 to 65 inches, it is a large bird, 21 to 28 inches tall. Although it is native to the Canadian tundra, it moves southward in search of food. In recent years, many birds have been attracted to Boston’s Logan Airport because of its surrounding marshlands. For reasons of safety, Mass Audubon and the Blue Hills Trailside Museum have been capturing, banding and outfitting the birds with tracking transmitters before releasing them at Duxbury Beach. Bring your binoculars; we will take a winter ride to the beach in hopes of an owl sighting.
