Rich in History
Settled in 1624 by Pilgrims Myles Standish and John Alden, Duxbury was incorporated in 1637. The town was named after Duxbury Woods of Chorley, Lancashire, Great Britain, the home town of Myles Standish. Duxbury became known for its shipbuilding with 20 shipyards building schooners, brigs and three-masted ships. In the mid-1800’s, the trade became obsolete as ships became too large to navigate shallow Duxbury Bay. Today, the town boasts many beautiful Colonial ship captains’ homes from this era. Duxbury is the sixth largest cranberry producer in Massachusetts. Island Creek Oysters is famous nationwide for its shellfish.

The Atlantic Ocean continues to influence the seaside character of the community – to enjoy Duxbury senior living, Duxbury Beach is picturesque and unspoiled and the Duxbury Bay Maritime School serves over 1,800 students during summertime boating. Cultural events and the arts are integral to the lifestyle with the Art Complex Museum and the South Shore Conservatory of Music at the Ellison Center hosting many fine events.
